The NMAA Foundation distributed $22,000 in scholarships during the 2019-2020 school year.  Due to the challenges brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation Board of Directors has decided to do even more during this unique school year.  Thus, twenty (20) additional $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to New Mexico students in an effort to support even more kids during these difficult times. With the already established annual scholarships and these additional “Together We Rise Scholarships and Matching Scholarship Gift Opportunities”, the NMAA Foundation will distribute approximately $45,000 to the youth of our state during 2020-2021.     LIFE OF AN ATHLETE

    The New Mexico Activities Association, with the support of the New Mexico Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Bureau and the assistance of the American Athletic Institute, has successfully launched Life of An Athlete.com. This interactive, on-line curriculum focuses on the dangers of alcohol as it relates to a student-athlete’s life and athletic performance. This nationally unique program is free and takes approximately 45-50 minutes to complete.

    New Mexico Public Education Department Driver Requirements

    Safety Starts at the Bus Stop

    Your child should arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Visit the bus stop and show your child where to wait for the bus: at least three giant steps (six feet) away from the curb. Remind your child that the bus stop is not a place to run or play.

    Get On and Off Safely

    When the school bus arrives, your child should wait until the bus comes to a complete stop, the door opens, and the driver says it’s okay before approaching the bus door. Your child should use the handrails to avoid falling.

    Use Caution Around the Bus

    Your child should never walk behind a school bus. If your child must cross the street in front of the bus, tell him/her to walk on a sidewalk or along the side of the street to a place at least five giant steps (10 feet) in front of the bus before crossing. Your child should also make eye contact with the bus driver before crossing to make sure the driver can see him/her. If your child drops something near the school bus, like a ball or book, the safest thing is for your child to tell the bus driver right away. Your child should not try to pick up the item, because the driver might not be able to see him/her.

    NMSBA Procedures

    Jemez Mountain Policy Manual

    The Jemez Mountain Public School District is operated in accordance with policies established by the Board and regulations developed by the Superintendent.  The Board, which represents the state and local community, adopts policies after careful deliberation, and the school administration implements the policies through specific regulations and procedures.  The Board and administration evaluate the effects of the policies and procedures and revise them as necessary.

    To promote harmony, efficiency, uniformity of interpretation, coordination of effort, and fairness to all concerned, the print copy of the manual will be accessible at the District office and at such other places as designated by the Superintendent.

    How the manual is organized.  The manual is organized according to the classification system of the National School Boards Association.  The system provides an efficient means of coding, filing, and locating policies.

    A Safe Zone is a designated location where students can receive support and resources needed in order to be successful in school.  Our Safe Zone program was implemented through the Reducing LGBTQ Adolescent Suicide (RLAS) organization to assist students that may be facing barriers.  Each school has a designated Safe Zone, which can be identified with Safe Zone signage.

    Section 504

    Section 504 is a civil rights statute that provides certain protections to special education and general education students, employees, parents, and community members with disabilities.

    Students with disabilities who do not qualify for services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1990 (IDEA) may have rights if they are eligible under Section 504.

    A person who has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities, such as caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, or working, has a disability under 504.

    Instructional Support

    IDEA 2004 defines related services as: “(26) Related services.–(A) In general.–The term `related services’ means transportation, and such developmental, corrective, and other supportive services (including speech-language pathology and audiology services, interpreting services, psychological services, physical and occupational therapy, recreation, including therapeutic recreation, social work services, school nurse services designed to enable a child with a disability to receive a free appropriate public education as described in the individualized education program of the child, counseling services, including rehabilitation counseling, orientation, and mobility services, and medical services, except that such medical services shall be for diagnostic and evaluation purposes only) as may be required to assist a child with a disability to benefit from special education, and includes the early identification and assessment of disabling conditions in children.” 34 CFR Section Sec. 602 (26) (A).

    All students with disabilities (SWDs) are engaged in high-quality curriculum and instruction within inclusive educational environment opportunities that leads to deep learning which results in college, career, and community readiness.

    Mission

    The Special Education Division will provide supports to districts, parents, and SWDs to ensure outcomes of a free appropriate public education for students protected under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). We will review data to make decisions that will impact support for SWDs to meet college and career-ready standards through equitable access to rigorous courses, high-quality instruction, and appropriate supports.

    The SED has high expectations, engages in culturally responsive practices, promotes student relationships, family and community engagement and a collective responsibility for SWDs and their families.
